The Office of Student Media is searching for Mason Cable Network’s next General Manager. The General Manager would serve as the student leader of MCN, and will be responsible for leading the networks producers, editors, videographers and other staff members. This paid position officially begins in fall 2013, but the manager will take the head position within the first few weeks of May 2013. Prior to the May transition the new General Manager will shadow the current manger during the end of April and beginning of May. The new General Manager will also need to be available a week before the start of fall classes for professional development and training.

Key responsibilities include:
• Leading the MCN team in programming decisions, ensuring quality and safeguarding ethics
• Guiding distribution of all programming
• Reading and responding to the MCN email account (mcn@gmu.edu),
• Review the work of producers, along with tutoring and mentoring the team on how to improve all aspects of television production and practice
• Facilitating staff meetings and attending all required meetings through the Office of Student Media
• Keeping track of the MCN budget and purchases
• Updating the MCN production book yearly
• Serving as a liaison to other student organizations
• Maintaining and expanding upon MCN’s social media usage, including its integration in reporting, cable production practices and viewership
• Collaborating with other Student Media Leaders on projects, events and coverage, with an emphasis on uniting efforts for office goals
• Maintaining and selecting the size of staff and building on the growth of MCN

The ideal candidate should be available to meet the necessary time requirements (20 hours a week) of a demanding job that requires him or her to be available when news calls.

• Always seeks to learn more, regularly digests news about the media and technology, with a capacity to apply what is learned to student media productions
• Has extensive knowledge of George Mason University’s campus and currents,

• Develops a strong chemistry with and among the team
• Motivates staff to strive for excellence and produce the best possible programming and content that represents MCN’s mission of providing television programming for the Mason Community, reflecting the MCN tagline of “Your Face, Your Voice”
• Stays informed on the best web practices and has a basic knowledge of college TV, video production and live broadcasting.

The position is paid and requires 15 hours of time a week. The Associate Manager works directly with the General Manager to ensure the success of the network and those working with it.

JOB DESCRIPTION

• Works closely with the General Manager.
• Reads/responds to the mason email account (mcn@gmu.edu)
• Assists the General Manager in the day to day operations of the network.

• Works with Broadside, Connect2Mason.com, WGMU Radio and other student media groups to encourage and implement convergence.

• Takes charge of the network and absence of the General Manager or in times when the General Manager is unfit to run the network.
• Works with each staff member on every level to ensure the success of the network both offline and online.
• Works with other student organizations and departments(Mason Liaison)

• In charge of getting the shows from Producers weekly.

Mason Cable News had its first run through and we’re busy getting everything ready for our first show on Feb. 5. As the date gets closer, we are getting more and more anxious to bring you the news. MCNews is actively recruiting for the semester for a variety of positions that have yet to be filled.

We are looking for the following:

Anchors (1 + Backup Anchor): Anchors are the main on-camera talent and will be assigned to either Tuesday or Thursday morning, bringing in the week and taking us out for the weekend. Anchors are on-camera talent and as such, must exhibit a professional and personable sense on-air. You will be responsible for seeking out stories, writing script, and reading news on-air on a weekly basis. Previous experience preferred.

Reporters (3): Reporters will seek out news, creating media packages with photographers, working to bring the Mason Nation exciting and informative stories. Reporters will be able to gain on-camera experience and work in the field and in studio. You will be responsible for seeking out stories, writing script, and reading news on-air on an on-call basis. Previous experience preferred.

Photographers/Video Journalists (6): Photographers will work with anchors and reporters to create informative media packages, using either video or photo to tell the story. They will produce stories, mini-documentaries, and more. Please send a demo reel if you have one.

Community Interviewer (1): Community interviewer will be responsible for scheduling and conducting interviews a new person or group every week. Must be personable, be able to hold and conduct a coherent conversation.
